Reconnecting with your roots –through filter coffee

coffee beans

On a recent visit to a friend’s home in Chennai, I was treated to a steaming hot cup of aromatic filter coffee. It had been a long day, and the cup of filter coffee was just what I needed to rejuvenate my tired senses.

As they say, every local in Chennai is a coffee connoisseur (including my friend) and you cannot escape the discussions about the different types of filter coffee (or “filter kaapi” as it is commonly referred to in South India) and the correct way of preparing it. All the talk about coffee kind of transported me back to my teenage years when each morning was spent with a cup of coffee in one hand and a newspaper in the other hand – yes, you read it right; there was a time when I used to read the morning newspaper. Drinking the same cup of coffee on a weekend or holiday had its own charm as the refreshing beverage could be enjoyed dressed up in your night clothes and under the comfortable glow of the morning sun shining on my face.

Call me old-fashioned or whatever, but the machine-brewed coffee in office and all the coffee drinking in Starbucks or Café Coffee Day could not quite capture the same nostalgia as a freshly-made cup of coffee at home. While the cappuccinos and the expressos have created their place under the sun, the real deal for coffee lovers probably would always remain the Madras kaapi or the Kumbakonam coffee, as clearly emphasized on by my Chennai friend!

Want to reconnect with the freshness and soul-stirring aromas of pure coffee at home or in your office? Try out the varieties of “filter kaapi” beans from Aromas of Coorg.
